Eco Fest celebrating 10 years this weekend By Jill Kwasniak SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER 9 · Wednesday, April 14, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Residents are encouraged to come out this weekend for the 10th annual Halton Eco Festival at the Glen Abbey Community Centre. "The Halton Eco Festival is our 10th annual environmental fair that features sponsors, exhibitors, information booths with their products, services and campaigns and education workshops," said Stephen Dankowhich, Oakville Community Centre For Peace, Ecology And Human Rights (OCCPEHR) executive director and the co-ordinator of the festival. "The goal of the festival is to raise awareness about environmental issues and to share with the community that there are solutions to environmental problems and that people can discover many of those solutions at the Halton Eco Festival." Dankowich said some of the environmental issues include smart growth, reducing, reusing, recycling, home gardening, energy efficiency, renewable solutions and health and wellness and how it connects to the environment. There will be 75 exhibitors along with 15 different workshops at the festival. "We're featuring Mike Nickerson, who is with the Sustainability Project and he's published a couple of books on the issues of sustainability. So that conversation will take place with Mike each day at noon for an hour and a half." The festival includes activities for children as well as adults. "We have a 2,600 square foot kids' eco fun area, which will be in the other arena," he said. "There, the children will experience environmental education, which is being hosted by the Trafalgar Ridge Montessori School." There will be a silent auction held both days. "The silent auction is comprised of more than 50 gifts that can be bid upon," Dankowich said. "These consist of gift baskets, gift certificates, products and services that our sponsors and exhibitors have donated and some others, who were not able to attend, donated as well to the silent auction." Other activities at the festival include healthy meals and snacks served by Sky Dragon, live music by Studies in Non-Violent Action, Eco Jeopardy and an environmental contest held by Green Pole Solutions. People planning on attending can bring used books, which will be collected by Stellla, for schools in Africa. People can also bring canned goods for the local food banks and receive a dollar off admission. "We're very pleased it's our 10th annual year," said Dankowich. "It's a real celebration. We hope that the community will come out and celebrate with us." The festival will be held Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday- from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre on Third Line at Upper Middle Road in Oakville.
