www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, April 15, 2010 · 12 Grannies stride to turn things around in Africa Continued from page 9 of others collectively covering 8,000 km across Canada. Community leaders will walk with the grandmothers. St. Mildred's- Lightbourn School students will marshal the route. Residents at Revera Retirement Homes, the national sponsor, will provide refreshments at halfway points. Stride to Turn the Tide has its roots in the first i n t e r n a t i o n a l Grandmothers' Gathering in 2006, which brought together 300 African and Canadian grandmothers in Toronto. In their joint statement to the world, the Canadian grandmothers made a promise: "We will not rest until they can rest". True to this promise, Halton walkers, grandmothers and community leaders who participate in Stride to Turn the Tide, will be urging the Canadian government to support Education for All, an initiative to provide education to all children. As Lewis says, "In Africa, it will be the children who lead the continent out of the AIDS pandemic." Since the launch of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign in 2006, more than 220 groups of Canadian grandmothers have taken up the call to action and raised over $7 million. Money raised by the campaign funds community-level organizations in 15 sub-Saharan African countries that provide grandmothers with much needed support including housing, food, transportation, micro-credit grants, grief counselling and school fees for their grandchildren.
