"My biggest fear is seeing the kids we've been taking care of being thrown back into a society where nobody cares about them," she said. That's where her latest project comes in. Next September, Mulvale and a group of 20 to 30 supporters will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in hopes of raising $250,000 to build a centre for vocational training for the "graduates" of Rafiki. Mulvale's 15-year-old son Zack hopes to be a part of that special event after joining his mother on her trip to Rafiki last summer and helping build the children's playground. "Rafiki was probably the most amazing thing I've done so far in my life. It makes me very proud of her and makes me think that I want to help and be able to do things like this too, and make my own difference in the world," he said. Adam Scott, Mulvale's friend of 25 years and nationallevel cyclist, cooled down after five hours of intermittent spinning and spending the day as a team leader to talk about his experience at the Ride. "It was another great day of riding with friends, surrounded by a great bunch of people, leader and participant-wise. There was amazing energy from the participants," said Scott. Scott's job as a team leader for the event is to support the riders and offer that extra push, or flow of energy as he calls it, to keep them going. "Motivation is key," he said. "There's an element of energy that's necessary to lift the room." The plans that Scott and Mulvale have for next year's ride are bigger and better than they have been in three years, and will span Burlington and Oakville. "Next year we're doing a double (two days)," Scott said. Both Scott and Mulvale, insist they are just part of a group of people who make the success of the fundraiser, and Rafiki, possible.
