Midget BB Hornets win OWHA title Third gold for #1 Venom At the beginning of the girls' hockey season, Steve Casey was scrambling for players to fill out the roster of his Oakville midget BB Hornets squad. "We had to look outside the rep system to house league to find girls that were willing to play," said Casey, noting many midget players were more familiar with the midget B coach and chose to play that level instead. "Then we had to get the girls to buy into the system we were playing." It was certainly worth the effort. The midget BB Hornets won the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championship last weekend in Newmarket, defeating the Walkerton Capitals 2-1 in the final to conclude a 6-0 showing at the tournament. It was a fitting finish to a dream season for the Hornets, who also won the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League championship. There is no national tournament for the midget provincial champion to move on to, but that doesn't bother Casey in the least. "Ending where it is is perfect," he said. "I don't want to get greedy. I think they've had enough hockey this season, to be honest with you. It's a great way to end it." Oakville's other wins at provincials came against the Marathon North Shore Wolverines (7-0), North York Storm (3-0), Markham-Stouffville Stars (1-0), Russell Coyotes (1-0) and Kanata Rangers (3-1). Members of the Hornets are Rebecca Burns, Rachael Burton, Paige Casey, Alex Davies, Isabella Dinadis, Jackie Fossenier, Jeannette Gamble, Lisa Guidoni, Laura Heyland, Abbey Jagodkin, Katherine Karthaus, Christina McLean, Jacki Mihaichuk, Hanna Moore and Maddie Warner. Murray Gamble, Paul Nieweglowski and Benny Guidoni are assistant coaches, and Kathy Moore is the trainer. -- Jon Kuiperij The Oakville Venom major bantam boys' #1 basketball team won its third gold in four tournaments so far this season, claiming the Division 2 championship at last weekend's Blessed Sacrament tournament in Hamilton. Oakville won its pool, then defeated the Goulbourn Hornets 62-54 in the semifinals and downed the St. Catharines Rebels 59-51 in the gold-medal contest. The Venom #1 squad wasn't the only Oakville team to enjoy success in Hamilton. The Oakville Vytis won the Division 2 consolation title, while the Oakville Venom #2 team won gold in Division 6. Members of the Venom #1 team are Keenan Danso-Dapaah, Jordan Whyte, Mithun Vijayasekar, Thomas Evers, Marcello Hewitt, Ryan Bekker, Scott Cece, Liam FitzPatrick, Darryl Jean, Denver Kotack and Adam Thornton. Gerardo Torres and Sam Twumasi coach the Venom. 41 · Thursday, April 15, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com www. com Volunteers needed for Mercedes 10K race Volunteers are needed to assist with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K run in support of the United Way of Oakville.
