The meeting will include information on: · preventing negative impacts associated with workplace alcohol and other drug use · associated legal and addiction concerns · alcohol and drug testing · policy development and implementation · communications strategies and awareness · education and training programs Halton Region's health department will host the workshop, which will be of particular interest to human resources staff, health and safety committee members, union leaders and occupational health nurses. In Canada, $1.4 billion is lost each year because of decreased productivity caused by hangovers, according to the health department. The Province estimates alcohol and substance abuse costs Ontario $9.2 billion per year in health care, law enforcement and lost labour productivity. The keynote speaker at Halton's workshop will be Barbara Butler, author of Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace. The seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Halton Regional Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd.
