The annual Halton Catholic District School Board robotics challenge took place March 31 at Bishop Reding Secondary School and involved about 100 Grade 7 and 8 students. "The objective of this challenge is to inspire interest and excellence in science, technology, engineering and math through the use of robotics," said organizer and Bishop Reding engineering teacher Bruce Mazer. "They had a blast." The number of participating students is up more than 20 per cent over last year. The students competed in nine different challenges using Lego NXT robots. Computer engineering teachers from six schools in Milton, Burlington, Oakville and Georgetown prepared the challenge. In the Oakville division, first place went to the team from St. Andrew School, which consisted of Alex Chyz, Brian Harrison, Dominique Dinalfo and Victoria Gillies. Taking first place in the entire Grade 7/8 category was the St. Brigid School team, from Halton Hills, which consisted of David Perna, Caroline Luszawski, Ashley Attard and Alex Wall. For the first time this year, students in Grades 5 and 6 from Milton and Burlington schools also participated in their own unique robotics challenge, with six teams (26 students) competing at this level. Like the Grade 7 and 8 students, they were given three days of training prior to the challenge. On challenge day, they had their own set of nine challenges. The winning team is from Guardian Angels Elementary School, and is made up of Alejandro Becerra, Samantha Apputhurai, Michael Almeida and Nicole Spozato. NuTech, a Milton company that builds laser robotic systems, gave a presentation to the students, which included demonstrating a huge robotic arm. "The kids were wowed," Mazer said. All first-place finishers from the Grade 7/8 level advanced to the Halton Skills competition April 13 at Robert Bateman High School in Burlington. One team from the Halton Catholic District School Board will advance to the Ontario Skills competition in Waterloo May 20.
