"The poems are all about collection of poems about him (Sawchuk) to some Sawchuk won numerous extent, but they're much awards including the more than that," Maggs $25,000 Kobzar 2010 said. "They're about fami- Literary Award. lies, they're about immigra"The first poem that I tion, they're about the wrote that made use of inability to speak what's hockey really was a inside yourself." metaphor," he said referring The nearly 200-page to one of the pieces in the book, The Season of Wayward Thinking. "It wasn't about hockey in itself, it was about the difference between the world where I'd grown up out west and the world I was living in at that time which was Newfoundland." Maggs currently resides in Newfoundland. During the time when Sawchuk was playing hockey and making a name for himself, Maggs lived in Winnipeg -- Sawchuk's birthplace -- so the poet's interest in the hockey player has existed since his youth. Also, hockey was a part of his family's life as he played the sport himself and his brother played professionally for the Chicago Blackhawks. Maggs said his poetry reading will be more than just poetry alone. "I'll talk about Terry at the centre of the book," he said. "I'll talk about the goaltenders of that period and how they revolutionized the game. I'll probably talk a lot about history and story because this is a work of imagination. I'm inside Terry's head a good part of the time." Admission costs $5 at the door and will include a chapbook of the poems read while quantities last. The café is at 137 Kerr St. For information, visit www.oakvillepoetry.org and click on the Poetry Month tab.
