"She got a little belligerent when I went around the back there the other day. I had gone to get some traffic pylons out and she was a little upset about that and followed me all over the place," he said. "When you get too close, they'll start hissing, but I can tell you right now, if they come after you and they're real mad they'll hurt you pretty good with their beak or their wings, even their webbed feet have little claws on them." Richarz said the first beer deliveryman to attempt to use the chute, after the arrival of the geese, had so much trouble with them he aborted his efforts. Instead, he carried the beer cases down to the Legion's clubroom where he recommended the Legion call the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and have the geese and nest removed. The Legion decided against this, however, with Richarz saying that if the geese and nest were removed, there was no guarantee the mother would sit back on the nest once it was deposited in a new location. "We're just going to leave it and let nature take its course," said Richarz. "The beer truck delivery guys will just have to suffer a little extra work and haul the stuff downstairs if they want to make their money. They have a little more physical "When you get too close they'll start hissing, but I can tell you right now, if they come after you and they're real mad, they'll hurt you pretty good with their beak or their wings, even their webbed feet have little claws on them." While the geese may not be that popular among beer delivery personnel, they have generated considerable interest among the membership at the Legion with a couple members, dubbed `mother goose protectors' volunteering to keep the mother goose from being disturbed. Heather McGaw heard about the goose from a friend, who is a member at the Bronte Legion, and stopped by with her son David to see and photograph the unusual nesting site. "This vent (above the nest site) keeps her warm so that's why she picked this spot," said McGaw. "It's just an unusual spot, it's in the back of the parking lot of the Bronte Legion." The strange scene inspired McGaw to do some research on the Canada Goose and points out that when the eggs hatch, in about a month, and the birds leave, the Bronte Legion should remove the nest as mother geese have a tendency of using the same nests year after year. If this happens, beer delivery personnel could be doing extra legwork at the Bronte Legion for a very long time.
