New campaign, new slogan -- same need By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville is a great place to live and it should be a great place to live for everyone. So says Mary Cardamone, a long-time resident and businesswoman, who is at the helm of the 2010 United Way of Oakville (UWO) campaign. While the campaign won't officially kick into high gear until next fall -- it runs from September to December -- a June 9 Mayor's Invitational Golf Tournament benefiting the United Way is on the horizon. Foursomes are still need- ed for this year's edition that is slowly making its way onto the horizon. In anticipation of it all, the dozen recruited 2010 campaign cabinet members officially met to put their heads together for the first time this week. They reviewed last year's campaign -- See Slogan page 9 Halton police will be taking to the waters of Lake Ontario with a vengeance this boating season thanks to the recent acquisition of Marine 1, a 39-foot Hike Metal boat. Equipped with twin-diesel Volvo Penta engines, Marine 1 is capable of reaching speeds of approximately 76 km/hr and is outfitted with such special equipment as a thermal-imaging camera, a radio directional finder, radar, searchlights and a global positioning system. Police say this equipment is essential for conducting rapid search and rescue operations. With all this equipment, the boat did not come cheap costing more than $600,000, however, Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell says it's going to be worth every penny. At the boat's official launch at the Bronte Outer Harbour on Monday, Crowell spoke about how Marine 1 will benefit the Halton community. "Today, with the launch of this new 39-foot Hike Metal boat, our Marine Unit will now be able to rapidly respond to emergency calls within Halton, including our own inland waters and will be able to enforce laws with boaters who may be violating the Criminal Code, the Liquor Licence Act, the Ontario Game and Fish Act and any federal acts pertaining to waterways, such as the Canada Shipping Act," said Crowell.
