Memorial tree provides lasting tribute to loved one The Town of Oakville's Memorial Tree Program allows residents to purchase or adopt a tree in memory of a loved one, to dedicate to a friend or family member, or to commemorate a special event. "The program gives residents a chance to create a unique and lasting memory for someone or something special in their lives," says Heather Turenne, manager of Harbours and Cemeteries, Town of Oakville. "It is also a great way to improve our community and help the environment." Residents can choose any park or cemetery for their memorial tree, subject to availability. Once the chosen location has been approved, Town staff will select an appropriate new tree or identify an appropriate tree for adoption. The memorial tree will be taken care of by Town staff in the course of their regular park maintenance. An initial five-year commitment includes the purchase, planting and maintenance of the tree along with a personalized cast bronze plaque. The commemorative plaque is set in concrete and placed at the base of the memorial tree. Participants receive a certificate acknowledging the planting or tree adoption. After the five-year period, participants can continue to renew your commitment every five years. Residents interested in the Memorial Tree Program can find more information and order forms on the Town's website at www.oakville.ca/memorialtree.htm. 17 · Friday, April 30, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com If you have a news tip or story idea, call the Oakville Beaver at 905-845-3824.
