An Oakville concert band that has been around for some 150 years will cross all musical boundaries at its upcoming spring concert. The Oakville Wind Orchestra (OWO), which calls itself Canada's oldest concert band, is hosting Inspirations, at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts Sunday, May 2. The orchestra's musical director, who will be conducting the concert, Chris Arthurs said the band can play any genre of music -- from Baroque to modern pop -- and will at this concert. "Concert band can cross all style genres," he said. "That's the great thing about concert band. You can play music from the last 400 years." Aside from classical music, the orchestra will perform modern tunes from films and Broadway, as well as pop music. To assist with the songs that have lyrics, will be guest vocalist, Oakville soprano Stephanie Domingues. Domingues, who has performed with many groups in Oakville, has made many musical achievements. She has performed in the Canadian Opera Company's The Magic Flute, Turandot and The Queen of Spades and has performed internationally. "People will hear music that they know, they will hear music that they like and they will hear music that they enjoy," he said. "The OWO has a knack for playing music that people want to hear." As the concert is titled, the concert will draw on the theme of inspirations. Arthurs said the music will represent things in life that inspire people such as family, friends, community and nature. The musicians will talk to the audience about the music and the composers of the pieces and about the instruments they use in an effort to engage and educate the listeners. The band will also discuss its history. Arthurs said the band began as a regimental citizens band and held a public performance on July 1, 1867. However, he said the band may have been around before that time, even as many as several decades before. The concert will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $15 with senior and child discounts available.
