Cassidy feels wheelchair racers don't need to specialize in one distance or another. "It's not like running in that the distance of events that can be covered is much more broad. It's more like speed skating or rowing," he said. "Since it's strength and endurance, I will be able to cover a greater spectrum of events. I will be competing in the 1,500m, the middle distance (5,000m) and the marathon." In London last weekend, Cassidy overcame a field that included world record-holder Ernst van Dyk of South Africa, four-time London Marathon winner David Weir of Britain and defending champion Kurt Fearnley of Australia. It wasn't easy. Competitors battled pounding rain, howling winds and bumpy terrain throughout the course. Some, like Weir, saw their tires get punctured. Cassidy used a heavier set of wheels and avoided any tire problems. But his race was nearly ended at the five-kilometre mark when he had to negotiate around a sharp turn at the bottom of a steep hill. "I knew a guy crashed there in the past on a rainy day as well. It knocked two paramedics out -- one went unconscious, another broke his leg -- so I knew this was a very dangerous spot," Cassidy said. "I took it safely... judged it perfectly, but a guy clipped my front wheel around the turn. I went over on one wheel and, as I was moving 27 kilometres an hour, I had to hammer my fist down and push myself up so I could keep going. That was extremely close to game over for me." Cassidy went on to finish the course in 1:35:21. He will soon focus on the shorter distances once again as he prepares for the track season. Cassidy will compete in a meet in Liverpool at the end of next month and then the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.
