Date Saturday, May 1 Location Campbellville (parking lot) Oakville (lower parking lot) Saturday, May 15 The Town of Oakville has moved one step closer to adopting the Presto Farecard system in preparation for Oakville Transit's full-scale rollout of the project on Monday, May 10. Oakville's Community Services Committee voted Tuesday to renew a governance agreement that sets out all the terms for how the Town will implement the project in the coming months. Presto is an electronic farecard, which is intended to make it easier for people to pay their fare when moving within and between transit systems. With Presto, transit riders put a balance on their Presto card and then use that card to pay when getting on a bus, transferring or moving to a different type of transit sys- tem, like the GO train. Instead of using multiple tickets or passes to get from destination to destination, a rider now only requires one card. This also allows for convenient payment. A rider just has to ensure there is a balance on the card and then tap it against the card reader on the bus or at the station. Currently, existing passes and tickets are expected to last until the middle of next year before they will be phased out. Oakville Transit's Presto Project Manager Andy Will discussed the steps that have already been taken to introduce Presto to Oakville. These included: · Five hundred Oakville transit riders were recruited to use Presto · Presto readers were added to 10 Oakville Transit buses, as well as the Oakville and Bronte GO stations. "We have been within stage one, our field trials of the project. We launched this back at the end of November in 2009 on three routes (22, 110, 32) as well as GO-operated train services from Bronte, Oakville to Union," said Will. "Within the last four months there have been just over 1,000 rides within the Oakville buses using the Presto system, which is pretty good and we have actually received very positive feedback overall from the public on this." Stage two, which is scheduled for implementation on May 10, will see the Presto system for adult customers in effect on all Oakville and Burlington Transit routes. When stage two is complete, customers will be able to use Presto cards on Oakville buses for travel within Oakville, between Oakville Transit and GO Transit, and Oakville Transit and Burlington Transit.
