Town releases salaries of hydro board members Town council voted to make the annual salaries for the directors of the Oakville Hydro Corporation public, Monday, citing the need for transparency as one of the dominating reasons for the disclosure. In a report to council Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said board compensation is considered public information for most corporations with the annual salaries of board members at such neighbouring utilities as Milton Hydro and Mississauga Hydro already made public. The report said a number of residents have also requested information on the salary levels of the Oakville Hydro directors. Burton also pointed out that because the Town of Oakville is Oakville Hydro's largest shareholder, the compensation package for the directors on the Oakville Hydro Corporation Board is subject to approval by council on an annual basis. Currently the chair of the board gets $14,200 each year with the committee chair getting $8,200 and the director/vice chair of the board getting $6,500. The directors also receive $300 for each board meeting they attend. These salaries will be re-examined during Oakville Hydro's annual shareholder's meeting on June 1. Burton stated in the report that members of council and/or Town staff who sit as members of the Oakville Hydro Corporation's board of directors, or any of its subsidiaries, do not receive compensation. Mayoral candidate John Kay, one of the residents who requested the Oakville Hydro director salary amounts be released, applauded council's decision, but was amazed it took so long to happen.
