The Devils' game against the Holy Trinity Titans was delayed for half an hour because the referee did not show up for the game at OT, leaving Trinity grad Spencer Morgan to officiate the contest. But once the game finally got started, so did the Devils. OT improved to 3-0 on the Halton Tier 1 season by blanking Trinity 27-0 in a rematch of last year's Halton final. The Red Devils won last June's meeting 12-5. "We have actually stepped it up quite a bit," said OT coach Adrian Lui. "These girls have been working hard since Grade 10 or Grade 9, and this is the product of that hard work." National under-18 team member Nisha Howarth scored two tries for the Devils, who led 17-0 at half. Christina McLean, Claire Sprawson and Stephanie Lachance-Coward added singles. Despite the one-sided result, Lui said his team fully expects to meet the Titans again in this year's Halton final. "I told the girls (that) right before the season started," said Lui. "We wanted to send a message." Message received, although the Titans aren't discouraged. They lost handily to OT in the regular season last year as well before giving the Devils all they could handle in the final. "This was a huge improvement on our side," said Titans head coach Chris Chliszczk, referring to an exhibition game between the two teams last week that OT led 30-0 at halftime. "This was a great learning experience to get improvement so when we meet them in the finals, we get a competitive game. "I think we made some errors (Monday) we didn't make in the final last year," he added. "Every year, you kind of start from scratch, with brand new girls that never played the game before." Trinity is now 2-1 and will close out the short regular-season schedule next Wednesday (May 19) when it takes on the 1-1 T.A. Blakelock Tigers. OT, which is slated to finish its regular season today (Wednesday) against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, will compete in a tournament Friday. The Devils have played in two tournaments already, winning one and being knocked out of the other in penalty kicks by Applewood -- the team that eliminated OT from last year's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament.
