Allen has two daughters, Hillary, 20, who is studying geography at McGill University and Shelby, 17, who is just wrapping up at Appleby College. Allen is a speaker for the Energy Council of Canada and at Deloitte, specializes in strategy and business performance improvement serving energy clients in Canada and internationally. "As a member of the firm's management team, Jane has broken through career barriers herself and is now working to remove barriers faced by women, not just at Deloitte, but in workplaces across the country," stated the YWCA. At Deloitte, Allen's leadership led to changes in business planning and evaluation, as well as policies and programs that promote the retention of women and others from equity-seeking groups. Allen said her work is guided by a firm commitment to equality, as well as a belief that organizations benefit from having, and valuing, a diverse workforce. With Allen's acumen behind it, Deloitte's Canadian Women's Initiative (CanWIN) was expanded and enhanced. CanWIN organizes internal and external events that address workplace gender topics. It is complemented by programs including: Women Mentoring Women and Career Moms, a group that offers networking and information sharing for women professionals who are also mothers. Allen's advocacy also led to the launch of the Canadian-Asian Network and LEAD (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees at Deloitte). As is her track record, Allen's work has had significant impact. Since taking on the chief diversity officer's role at Deloitte, the number of women and others from equity-seeking groups admitted to partnership and leadership positions has increased significantly. Communication about issues related to diversity and equity have also increased dramatically. Allen has used her role at Deloitte to support women at Deloitte, but also in other male-dominated industries. She established the Women in Energy Forum, bringing young, aspiring women together with Canada's leading energy leaders to inspire, encourage and provide networks for the advancement of women in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. A popular speaker, Allen raises awareness of equity and diversity issues in the workplace as she addresses audiences across the country. Her commitment to advancing women's equality in the workplace is also a matter of record. "Jane's work is transforming and strengthening both corporate Canada and the social and economic fabric of the country," stated the YWCA. Allen joined Deloitte's Consulting practice in 1996, became a partner in 2001 and national leader for the firm's Power & Utilities segment in 2004. The YWCA's Women of Distinction Awards were handed out at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Wednesday. Allen is one of eight women recognized this year, including: Rona Abramovitch (Education); Helen Burstyn (Community Leadership); Mary Anne Chambers (Community Service); Sister June Dwyer (Health and Healing); Claudine Labelle (Young Woman of Distinction); Noella Milne (Mentorship); and, Deborah Sinclair (Social Justice).
