Ian Anderson House, which was Ontario's first in-resident cancer hospice, has no access to natural gas and has been using propane to heat its facility and water. "It all comes down to doing the best we can for our residents and their families, but we're trying to cut costs by going green and we're the first hospice to do that and we're hoping others will follow suit," said Margaret Anderson, the hospice's founder and executive director. Now, with the installation, all water used in the hospice will be heated through energy collected by the new solar thermal system. "There's no gas lines that come out here so we have to rely on propane to heat our water and for our forced air to heat our hospice. So it's expensive," said Monique NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER SOLAR POWER: Ian Anderson House Founder Margaret Anderson and Monique Armstrong stand in front of the six, newly-installed solar thermal panels, which will heat all the water used in the hospice. Armstrong, who provides administrative support to Anderson at the hospice. However, in case of prolonged days without sunlight, propane will still be DIABETIC PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY (DPN) PAIN available to the hospice. A Clinical Research Study of an Investigational Oral Medication for people "We have an on-demand system, so let's with Hand, Foot, or Leg Pain caused by Diabetes - Related Nerve damage say it hasn't been sunny in two weeks, the NOW OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT water is heated on demand but only what is needed," Armstrong said. "This is an ultra-efficient system." But, the solar thermal system is only one step of Project Green which was launched in 2009 at the hospice. The hospice is also looking for funding to install a geothermal heating system at its facility as part of the project. "This will essentially reduce our reliance on propane power," Armstrong said. "The goal is to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels to heat and cool the house." The $27,000 solar system was paid for entirely through a grant from the Donner Canadian Foundation. The foundation has provided funding to the hospice in the past, including funding to build a resource centre at the hospice which provides families with educational and informational material. "It is estimated the system will pay for itself within four to five years," Armstrong said. The hospice offers, free of charge, endof-life palliative care in a home-like setting to people diagnosed with terminal cancer with a limited life expectancy. To operate the hospice has to raise $600,000 annually. The solar system will help reduce the operating cost of the facility. For more information, visit www.ianandersonhouse.com.
