C4CA is asking residents to join them in demanding Ford do the right thing in regards to a 900-megawatt gas-fired power plant proposed for the Fordowned lands at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. The protest, which will take place between 3:45-5 p.m., at the Kingsford Garden Plots (east of Ford Drive at Kingsway/Sherwood Heights Drive), will formally ask Ford to actively support the call for an individual environment assessment for the plant. This assessment could involve the evaluation of alternative sites such as Nanticoke in Haldimand County, C4CA representatives point out. The power plant has become contentious in Oakville with many residents concerned about the danger it could pose to local air quality. Fear of possible industrial accidents has also been expressed. The TransCanada plant is scheduled for completion by late 2013. Colonel Geoff Parker, 42, of the Royal Canadian Regiment, was in Kabul interacting with various international organizations in order to prepare for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan later this year. He was travelling with the convoy when the blast occurred, killing him along with five American soldiers and 12 Afghan civilians. His death makes him the highest-ranking Canadian soldier to be killed in the war in Afghanistan. At a press conference broadcast from Kandahar Tuesday, Canadian Forces Colonel Simon Hetherington spoke about the type of person Parker was and the unmatched potential he possessed. "Geoff was well known, he was highly respected and a great friend to countless army officers and soldiers across Canada. The post he was preparing to fill was important and of such high profile that he was hand picked from across the army to do so. A rising star, his potential was undeniable." Despite such abilities, Hetherington said Parker was a humble individual, who was quite often the butt of his own jokes. "His loss will be felt by many," said Hetherington.
