Oakville Gymnastics Club boasts five provincial champs Five Oakville Gymnastics Club athletes were crowned provincial champions at the recent all-Ontario meet in St. Catharines. Jessica Savona, Jordyn Pedersen and Kathryn Doran won provincial titles in their respective women's gymnastics divisions, while Emma Chau and Luke MacKinnon earned gold in tumbling competition. Savona, who will compete in the national championships this year for the fifth time, overcame some early-season injuries to win the senior national division. Her dynamic Michael Jacksoninspired floor exercise and her consistent routines won over the judges. Known for her powerful and explosive tumbling, Pedersen also demonstrated her finesse on the uneven bars and beam to win the national novice division. She is expected to be a medal contender at the national championships, having won Elite Canada earlier this season. Doran beat out a large number of competitors to win the Level 8 division, establishing herself as one of the province's top prospects. Doran has benefited from being one of the youngsters on the OGC's elite women's team, watching and learning from some of the top girls in Canada. Chau was a surprising gold medalist in tumbling after failing to win a medal in three previous qualification competitions during the winter. She finally put it all together -- speed, height, form and controlled landings -- to win the provincial D junior women's category. Chau beat out 17 other girls between the ages of 9-11. MacKinnon won tumbling gold in the national novice men's category for boys age 15 and up. He also won gold at all three Ontario Cup events leading up to provincials. The tumbling team veteran makes up for his small stature with his speed, technique and consistency on the tumbling strip. In other club news, OGC alumnus Aisha Gerber helped the UCLA Bruins win the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship in Florida recently. Gerber, a sophomore, was also named a second-team All-American on the balance beam. 25 · Wednesday, May 19, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville connection helps RIT advance OAKVILLE SOCCER CLUB Oakville's Jordan MacIntosh, Sean Gillies and Alex Crepinsek combined to score four goals as the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers defeated Connecticut College 11-9 Saturday to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division 3 lacrosse championship tournament.
