Town's flags will fly at half mast to honour fallen soldier Continued from page1 5 · Wednesday, May 19, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com "The thoughts and the prayers of all members of Joint Task Force Afghanistan are with Colonel Parker's friends and family tonight." Oakville MP Terence Young, who was reached while on government business in Turkey, echoed these sentiments. "I am deeply sorry to hear about the loss of Colonel Parker, who laid his life on the line to protect the innocent people of Afghanistan and help them build their own democracy, while helping to bring peace to the Middle East. My heart goes out to his family and friends for their loss," said Young. Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered his condolences in a statement, released Tuesday, and reiterated Canada's commitment to what it is doing in Afghanistan. "Canada is in Afghanistan at the request of the democratically-elected Afghan government, as part of a UN-mandated, NATO-led mission to help Afghans rebuild their country as a stable, democratic and self-sufficient society. The Taliban have consistently demonstrated their utter brutality through their complete disregard for the lives of innocent Afghans. This attack will not deter Canada from its mission to help the people of Afghanistan stand on their own in repelling the forces of extremism and international terrorism," said Harper. "Colonel Parker was a great Canadian who will be greatly missed by the Canadian Forces family and his community. Canadians are proud of and grateful for his service and for the contributions of all our men and women in uniform." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton announced the flags at Town Hall and all Town facilities would be flown at half mast until Colonel Parker's body is repatriated to Canada. On behalf of everyone in Oakville, I want to offer my sympathies to Colonel Parker's family," said Burton. "He's the first soldier from Oakville killed in Afghanistan and I grieve for his loss to his family and our community." Parker, who was raised in Oakville, was a 20year veteran of the Canadian Forces. He joined up in 1989 through the regular officer training program. He completed infantry officer training and was posted to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in London, ON in 1991. Parker was deployed as a platoon commander during Operation Harmony in 1992, which saw members of the Canadian Forces engaged in United Nations peacekeeping efforts in Croatia and Sarajevo. Parker was also deployed as part of the Canadian Forces Expeditionary Force to BosniaHerzegovina where he served as a company second-in-command for the Royal Canadian Regiment. Parker was married with two children. He had been working at the Canadian Forces' Land Force Central Area Headquarters in Toronto. The family business that service built.
