www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 20, 2010 · 12 Former assistant cooperating with U.S. investigators Continued from page 1 rooms with human growth hormone and the illegal drug actovegin. Among them are three unnamed NFL players, one of whom is based in Washington, D.C. Galea declined an interview request. His lawyer, Brian Greenspan, issued a statement Tuesday: "The announcement today that a complaint has been filed in the United States District Court of the Western District of New York is obviously disappointing. It is regrettable that Dr. Galea, a world renowned and respected sports medicine physician now faces these further charges. However, as this matter is now before the court, it is not proper to comment further. Dr. Galea looks forward to the opportunity to respond to these allegations at the appropriate time." Details of Galea's alleged medical treatments in the U.S. were provided to authorities by Mary Anne Catalano, Galea's former assistant. None of the allegations have been proven in a court of law. "Injections into the sites of muscle tears contained Actovegin, as did the IV drips," We're At Your Service ERRAND AND CONCIERGE ~ Shopping Service ~ Concierge Service ~ Home Care ~ Greeting Cards ~ Errand Running ~ Personal Assistant ~ Senior Assistance ~ Organizing Call for your free Consultation Today! 905-691-8516 or email info@wereatyourservicegta.com Scott Evans Owner/Consultant Giving you back what you need most... your time. reads the description of procedures Galea allegedly conducted as reported by Catalano. Actovegin, injected into the body, purports to improve stamina and helps injured players recover more quickly. An extract of calf's blood, the drug is not approved for sale in Canada or the U.S. and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency if used intravenously. "(Catalano) also said Dr. Galea would at times inject a cocktail containing HGH into an athlete." The complaint alleges Galea illegally distributed human growth hormone, made false statements to investigators and "did knowingly combine, conspire and agree with others to defraud the United States." The treatments took place between July 2007 and September 2009, the document says. "These patients include, but are not limited to, professional athletes from Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the Professional Golfers' Association," the complaint reads. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Galea has no licence to practice medicine in the United States. "Dr. Galea understood that treating these patients inside the United States was not lawful," Catalano told authorities. Catalano, a 32-year-old who lives in Etobicoke, first triggered an investigation into the doctor when she was stopped crossing the U.S.-Canadian border last year in Galea's Nissan Rogue filled with 20 vials and 76 ampoules of drugs, according to U.S. court documents. When she was initially stopped at the border, Catalano told investigators she was driving to Washington, D.C. to attend a medical conference with the drugs intended as mere displays. She has since recanted that story, says the federal complaint. "(Catalano) told investigators that the purpose for which (she) and Dr. Galea had come to the United States on that day and on numerous other occasions before then was for Dr. Galea to provide medical treatments to professional athletes in the United States," it reads. Catalano faces a federal charge in the U.S. for allegedly attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country. But that could be dropped before a scheduled court date next month, said her Toronto lawyer Calvin Barry. "We'll be going to Buffalo in advance of the June 11 date to resolve the matter and I anticipate it's going to be a resolution to something much less than what she's charged with," he said. "She continues to be co-operative." The Florida medical board confirmed to the Star that Galea is not licenced to practice medicine in the state. RCMP Sgt. Marc LaPorte said his agency's investigation into four criminal charges against Galea related to the use of Actovegin continues. Ontario's College of Physicians and Surgeons urges doctors not to use unapproved drugs on patients, but doesn't ban the practice, as long as there is patient consent. -- With files from Randy Starkman Life shouldn't be a chore Fun for the whole family, (even if you don't play basketball!)
