www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 20, 2010 · 18 Health Oakville Beaver Walk is about helping those left behind By Anum Khan METROLAND MISSISSAUGA MEDIA GROUP Bereaved Families of Ontario's Halton/Peel chapter is hosting a walk and barbecue to let people gather and memorialize loved ones. The Walk to Remember will be at Streetsville Memorial Park in Mississauga June 19. The 13th annual event runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and also includes a drum circle. New to this year's walk is a butterfly release, to be held after lunch. According to legend, if you whisper a wish to a butterfly after capturing it, the wish will come true. All proceeds go to the non-profit organization, which supports those dealing with the death of a family member. "It helps family members cope with loss when they are surrounded by many others who are dealing with a similar situation," said Bereaved Families of Ontario spokesperson Lisa Alexander. "My husband and I lost our daughter three years ago, and this program helped us because of all the mutual peer support we got." The goal for this year's walk is to raise $15,000 in pledges and donations. Last year's effort raised more than $11,000. Registration is at 10 a.m. and the walk is at 11 a.m. A barbecue lunch will follow and there will be children's entertainment from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. as well as an awards ceremony. For information or to register, call 905-848-4337 or visit www.bereavedfamilies.ca. As Canadians celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, Campbell, 20, has decided to honour her hero by cutting off her long hair to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation. She will donate her hair to Locks of Love, to be made into a wig for someone undergoing cancer treatment. Campbell has volunteered for the Oakville Terry Fox Run in the past, even dressing as a clown one year at the event to entertain the children. This year, she joined the Oakville organizing committee for the first time. Terry Fox was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, and had his leg amputated at the age of 19. "Terry changed everything and, even though he didn't finish his Marathon of Hope, he still inspires us today," said Campbell. Despite having Christi Campbell had long hair most of her life, on Wednesday, June 2 Campbell will say goodbye to her long locks. The Great Canadian Hair DO is a new initiative of the Terry Fox Foundation, and Campbell's haircutting event will be one of the first marking the 30th anniversary of Terry's Marathon of Hope. Christi Cuts Her Hair For Cancer will take place at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre at 2340 Ontario Street. Residents can support Campbell at the event or pledge online at www.terryfox.org or mail a pledge to Christi Cuts Her Hair For Cancer, c/o 1393 Selkirk Avenue, Oakville, ON L6L 2V2. Cheques payable to the Terry Fox Foundation. The 30th Anniversary Terry Fox Run will be Sunday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at Coronation Park with a new route for 2010.
