Classifieds Get Results! l Obituaries HIGGINS, Denis George "The Big Guy" began his life an only child on August 24, 1932 in Toronto and departed on May 17, 2010 in Oakville, leaving behind his loving wife Peggy, children Laurie (and Jeff), Michael (and Therese), Chris, (and Susan), David (and Noreen), John (and Sarah), and grandchildren Jonathan, Amy, Sophie, Nicholas, Emilie, Holly, Georgia, C a s e y, S e a m u s , D a n , Sam, Sean, Katie and Midgy. Denis sometimes spoke about his formative years at Appleby College, but much more often and fondly of spending his teens in London, Ontario. There he made life-long friends at London Central Collegiate, played football for U n i v e r s i t y o f We s t e r n O n t a r i o , a n d met the love of his life, Peggy. Together for nearly 55 years, they lived, traveled, moved and loved. Summers on the water in Muskoka, holidays in South Carolina and devoted friends in Oakville leave us all with happy m e m o r i e s . H e l o v e d w i n e , b e e r, a good meal and dessert but was never a lover of salad. No dinner was complete without offering him some. Following a career in corporate business, at the tender age of 50, Denis founded Higgins Party Rentals (now Higgins Event Rentals). In the early years, the expression was coined: "It's time to rebuild the empire." And so he did, eventually helping create a thriving family business in Toronto and Oakville. After a courageous struggle, he finally reached the end of his wonderful life s u r r o u n d e d b y f a m i l y. T h a n k s s o much to the kind workers at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their comfort, and to Dr. Bob Gabriel for his compassionate attendance to Denis throughout his lengthy illness. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Oakville. The funeral service will be on Friday, May 21, at 11:00 a.m.at St. Jude's Anglican Church followed by the scattering of ashes and a reception. Joyce, as she was known by her family and friends, is survived by her loving daughter Nancy Hale (Harris); son-in-law Bill Harris; two grandchildren David and his wife Elizabeth; and Debbie and her husband Jim Marentette; and three great grandchildren; Callum, Tavia, and Jack.
