Butterfly Park donations contributed to landscaped garden Continued from page 1 5 · Thursday, May 20, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com enjoy this new public space, which was made possible through countless volunteer hours and your generous donations," said Mayor Rob Burton at the ceremony. "A great deal of fundraising effort went into the Bronte Butterfly project and I thank the Town for its commitment to completing the Bronte Donor Recognition Garden. This park is great for Bronte," Ralph Robinson, Ward 1 Councillor and former chair of the Bronte Butterfly Foundation (BBF). In 2008, the former BBF presented $50,000 in raised funds to the Town to ensure the donors of the dissolved Bronte Butterfly Park project would be recognized at the park. In keeping with the original Bronte Butterfly Park vision, the park includes landscaped gardens, a gazebo and donor recognition in the form of 841 brick pavers, six trees with donor plaques and 26 benches with individual donor plaques. In addition, nine trees, 172 shrubs and 1,295 perennials were planted by way of donated funds. With a $500,000 commitment from Halton Region, the next phase of park development will see grading to the existing open spaces, the creation of walkways, and new infrastructure for lighting, storm sewers, catchbasins and water services. In late 2007, Oakville council formally acknowledged the BBF's decision to not proceed with the proposed butterfly park and winter skateway project due to lack of funding. Council then asked Parks staff to develop alternative park concepts for the land adjacent to the Bronte Outer Harbour, which is administered by Halton Region and maintained by the Town of Oakville. By 2009, nearly a decade after some had donated, council gave the green light to the Bronte Butterfly Donor Recognition Area. The garden was to be centred around the gazebo that was erected by the BBF effort in 2002. The BBF was created in 1999. Armed with grants from the Trillium Foundation, it aimed to raise $3 million for a 210-metre winter skateway and butterfly park. In the end, the charity could not raise the cash and called it quits in late 2007. The $50,000 the BBF had left when it threw in the towel was transferred to the Town and then used as part of the $250,000 cost of the recognition garden. Are You Happy With Your Smile?
