Trucker and truck firm facing charges By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 13 · Thursday, May 27, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com The driver of an Apra Truck Lines tanker is facing several charges after his rig overturned on the Dorval Drive/QEW overpass Tuesday evening. Oakville Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian Durdin said the truck had been travelling westbound on the QEW at around 5:30 p.m. and was in the process of driving up the exit ramp and turning south on Dorval Drive, when it went out of control and flipped onto its right side. The driver was able to crawl out of the truck and police and fire personnel arrived on the scene moments later. Emergency workers proceeded to contain the area as it was initially unclear as to what materials the truck was carrying. Halton Police Staff Sergeant Anthony Odoardi said police were on standby to evacuate nearby businesses, however, this turned out not to be necessary as emergency workers equipped with chemical sensors soon determined the contents of the truck were not leaking. "We knew from our reconnaissance of the vehicle there were no leaks so we knew there was no risk involved until they tried to right it," said Durdin. "We won't do anything until we have an identification of the product," explained the deputy fire chief. Durdin said those on the scene consulted with the truck's owners, the driver and CN Rail until it was officially determined the truck was carrying non-hazardous material. Odoardi said the material was a low-volume acid, similar to vinegar. No one was injured during the accident. The driver of the truck has been charged with driving a vehicle with a known defect and with careless driving. The trucking company, Apra Truck Lines, has also been charged with failing to ensure proper performance standards on its vehicle were met. The truck was finally righted and removed from the road around 11 p.m. The family business that service built.
