www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 27, 2010 · 18 Speaker to discuss Choosing to Age with Vitality Oakville residents interested in Choosing to Age with Vitality should head to St. Paul's United Church on Saturday, May 29. There, they'll find guest speaker Dr. Ellen B. Ryan, a professor emeritus with McMaster University and a specialist on psychology and gerontology. Ryan will be speaking as a guest of the church's Nurturing Care outreach program at a free event that is open to everyone in Oakville. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and Ryan will begin her address, complete with a presentation, at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served. St. Paul's is located at 454 Rebecca St., next to the YMCA of Oakville. Nurturing Care, which is chaired by Faith Witt, is about helping others and Witt said the St. Paul's congregation, along with the Oakville community, has a growing number of seniors. Ryan is a professor of psychology and gerontology at McMaster University. For the McMaster Centre for Gerontological Studies, she serves as series editor of Writing Down Our Years, a set of inexpensive books designed to highlight the many benefits of writing life stories for older adults. The most recent book in the series is entitled Celebrating Poets over 70 and presents the best of more than 1,000 poems submitted by writers aged 70-103. Ryan is a fellow of the Canadian Psychology Association and American Psychology Association and the Gerontological Society of America. She taught at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, serving as chair of psychology, before coming to McMaster University in 1982. She lives in Ancaster, Ontario with her husband, Patrick, and has three children and two grandchildren. Those interested in attending the forum can RSVP at 905-845-3427 or spunited@bellnet.ca. Cruise for a Cause to get everyone out on the water The 14th annual Cruise for a Cause will be Thursday, June 3 on Sixteen Mile Creek. The fundraiser helps mobility-challenged citizens enjoy life on local waters. When a recreational boat casts off, seniors and the mobility challenged are often left on the dock due to accessibility issues. That situation is changing due to the efforts of CharterAbility, an Oakville community group that is helping those with physical disabilities enjoy pleasure boating. The 14th annual cruise aboard the 300-passenger Wayward Princess will raise funds for CharterAbility's accessible boating program. Each summer, the program provides free pontoon boat cruises, as well as canoes and kayaks to physically challenged groups and individuals, so they can enjoy the freedom and fun of the water that many take for granted. There will be a dockside reception at 6:30 p.m. The boat and guests depart at 7 p.m. from the Navy Street Pier (Oakville Lighthouse). CharterAbility is a federal charitable organization while the PARDners Docking Facility is a community project endorsed by the Town of Oakville, Wai Nui O Kanaka Outrigger Canoe Club, Healthy Community Funders of Halton and the Rick Hansen Foundation with support from The Ontario Trillium Foundation. For tickets, or to learn more about CharterAbility, arrange a group cruise this summer or make a donation, visit www.charterability.com. Thank you for your support! SAVIS of Halton would like to thank all of the bowlers, sponsors, prize donors & volunteers who helped raise $26,000 to create a safer Halton community! Together we can end violence in Halton.
