Aviva Chernick is bringing her music group for a special concert and will perform tunes from the group's Juno Award-nominated album to celebrate the synagogue's 55th anniversary. Jaffa Road will stage the concert at the congregation. Its most recent album, Sunplace, was nominated for a Juno Award this year for world music album of the year award. The group performs original and ancient songs in Hebrew, Spanish and English. Its sound is an eclectic mix of cultures, including: Jewish, classical Arabic and Indian, as well as modern jazz, rock, pop and others. The group consists of Chernick on vocals, Chris Gartner on bass, Sundar Viswanathan on the saxophone and flute, and Jeff Wilson on the percussion. The synagogue is at 186 Morrison Rd. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $50 for a family and children under 13 get in free. For information, call 905-849-6000, ext. 10. Paton performing at CJ's Café A guitarist, singer and composer nominated for a Juno Award for his work with the Sultans of String will be perform solo in Oakville Friday, June 4. Eddie Paton will perform at CJ's Cafe in Bronte doing original tunes as well as covers of his favourite songs. He performs a mix of rumba, Latin jazz, pop-rock and classical guitar.
