Glen Abbey Community Centre celebrates 20th anniversary Oakville celebrated two decades of recreation and culture at the family-friendly Glen Abbey Community Centre 20th Anniversary Celebration on June 6 where hundreds of residents enjoyed the free or "retro-priced" programming taking place at the centre throughout the day. "Oakville is a town full of energetic, active people who enjoy recreation and culture," Mayor Rob Burton said. "Based on the turnout to celebrate the centre's 20th anniversary, I can see how important this facility is in providing these amenities to our community." Families enjoyed the kid zone with bouncy castle and slides, mini-gym, face painting, and crafts area. Staff offered CPR and first aid demonstrations to both adults and children. The library story times were a huge hit and an opportunity for the little ones to wind down. The cake-cutting countdown began at 12:30 p.m. when the mayor and councillors served birthday cake to celebrate the centre's 20 years in the community. "This centre is, simply-put, a "onestop shop" for affordable recreation and culture programs and services," Councillor Allan Elgar said. "We have a pool, ice rinks, fitness rooms, a library and much more all at your doorstep. What more could you ask for?" The roller-skating and in-line skating pad was packed with users and the free fitness class in the gymnasium was full. The squash courts were booked and the drop-in fitness classes were jampacked. The 75-cent swims in the pool were popular with adults and kids. Party goers enjoyed the Harmonichords performance and snacked on free cake, cotton candy, popcorn and roasted corn. "Over the years, the Glen Abbey Community Centre has welcomed thousands of users," Councillor Roger Lapworth said. "By year end, we expect to have more than 1,500 members at this facility alone. I encourage residents to take advantage of the diverse range of programs and services offered in this safe and fun environment."
