Scholars for May Court Thirty-six Oakville students received scholarships totaling $54,250 from The May Court Club of Oakville this week. Twenty eight of the students are 2010 high school graduates and eight are past recipients currently in university. The May Court Club is the oldest service club in Canada. It has been awarding educational scholarships for more than 30 years to students demonstrating a commitment to their school and their community. The May Court Club of Oakville raises and disburses funds primarily within the Oakville area. It supports many local causes that benefit those in need in the community. Its main source of funds is The Nearly New Shop located at 200 Kerr St. At the store, funds are raised through the sale of consignment items. The club also hosts a variety of fundraising events each year. It also has service groups within the club including a school puppet program and a lunch box program. Last year a fundraising dinner was held at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre on Oct. 2 specifically to raise funds for the May Court Scholarship Program. It was very successful. The May Court Club of Oakville Scholarship recipients included students from Abbey Park High School, White Oaks High School, St. Thomas Aquinas, Holy Trinity High School, Oakville Trafalgar High School, White Oaks High School and Iroquois Ridge High School. Carousel of Nations On June 25 and 26, the Carousel of Nations Multicultural Association's (CNMA) 12th annual Cultural Festival will be hosted in Kerr Village. A kickoff event will be held on June 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Encore Oakville Mews Cinema on Speers Road featuring short films on the various countries being represented in the festival. On June 26 there will be 12 pavilions, representing more than 30 countries, all showcasing their unique cultures at Kerr Street and Lakeshore Road. From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 26, the festival will feature live musical performances, art displays, a kids' zone, an artists' village tent, a variety of authentic and traditional dishes and refreshments, a skateboarding competition and lots of entertainment and fun, with something for every age group. The Kerr/Lakeshore location is accessible to the residents of Oakville, Halton and the surrounding communities. The festival is a free family event that contributes to the social cohesion of the Halton Region community. Since 1999, the festival continues to be a successful collaboration among the local ethno-cultural groups, professional and amateur multicultural artists, Halton Regional Police Service, local businesses, government and corporate sponsors. The CNMA exists to celebrate the cultural diversity of Halton Region for the educational and entertainment benefit of the community. As a member of the Oakville Arts Council, the CNMA promotes the understanding and appreciation of the diversity and significance of the multicultural arts in a cultural context.
