www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 16, 2010 · 2 Town wants answers on Bronte Creek pipeline spill Oakville Town Council expects to learn more in the coming weeks about the effect of the fuel pipeline spill in Bronte Creek. At the urging of Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson, council has requested that the following concerns be addressed as part of the environmental site assessment being performed by Trans-Northern Pipelines Incorporate (TNPI), the company responsible for the spill: · Effect of the spill on the quality of drinking water; · Effect of the spill on the quality of surface water and groundwater; · Extent of soil contamination and impact; · Effect of the spill on the creek marsh lands immediately adjacent and downstream of the spill site with particular attention to fish, wildlife and their respective habitats. Product containment, site investigations and various remediation activities have been in progress since the spill was discovered on March 11. As the spill was a result of a fuel pipeline leak, the National Energy Board has jurisdiction as the principal authority overseeing the management of this pipeline incident. The Ministry of the Environment is involved in a technical supportive capacity as well as regularly monitoring site conditions. TNPI took control of the spill response operations from the time it was discovered that the spill originated from its pipeline. The pipeline was immediately repaired and the National Energy Board has ordered TNPI to prepare a site remediation plan. The NEB and MOE are regularly hosting agency co-ordination meetings to ensure that all organizations involved, including the Town of Oakville, Region of Halton and Conservation Halton, are up to date. Town staff anticipates that the additional information requested from TNPI will be provided to Council in July.
