Teens kick off summer By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Most kids are looking forward to the summer. No school, no homework and no sweaters to go outdoors. Before summer can truly begin, high school students have to get through the endof-year exams. To this end, a group of local musicians in the same boat wants to kick off the summer with good times and some relaxation before exams begin. The pop-rock band Bounty, which consists of five guys aged 13-18, most of whom reside in Oakville, is holding a year-end concert Friday, June 18 at the Oakville Masonic Temple. "This is our last weekend before exams start. For the most of us this is the last year of high school. This is kind of everybody chill out, relax before the big exam week," said the band's lead singer Taylor Brockelsby. "This is the last moment before summer. Everyone is going to relax before the end of the year and this is kind of our kick start to summer." The show is all ages. The group formed about five years ago, but some of the faces have changed. Brockelsby and electric guitarist Sheldon Gill, both of Oakville, had the same guitar teacher who introduced them to each other. They formed a two-member group that shuffled through members over the years until the current group formed about two years ago. They have a demo CD of eight songs that they recorded live. What is exciting the band members these days though is the work they are doing for a new demo. They are working with recording producer Terry Brown who has worked with Canadian rock-band Rush, among others. "We're looking to promote this to record labels. If the demo catches, we'll have an opportunity to actually put out an album," Brockelsby said. "Every little thing that he has to say is absolutely golden," he said of Brown. "Everything he tells you about and working with him is crafting us as artists. It's a big influence on me and especially on the group. It's shaping us a lot. We're all just in awe of everything he can do in the studio." The other members are Oakville's Adrian Pantalone on bass, Mississauga's Nathan Bain on keyboard and drummer Dan Guerrette of Etobicoke. Most of the guys in the band are older teens however Guerrette is 13. Brockelsby said the band's former drummer was its oldest member, but Guerrette, who's been with the group for a few years, is now the youngest. "This kid, when we first met him, was 10-years-old," he said. "We're sitting there, 13, 14, auditioning a 10-year-old drummer, watching this kid blow everybody else out of the water, people who were 15, 16 years old. He was so impressive. How he conduct- ed himself maturely in a professional scenario is remarkable." Brockelsby and Bain write a lot of the music, but all members participate in the process. He said the band's influences consist of the Arkells, Rush, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures and others. "We didn't all get together because we like the same bands," he added. "It's all types of influences and different interests that are just brought together in one sound. There are a lot of different aspects to our music." Brockelsby said the show will provide good entertainment for anyone aged 13 to early 20s. "This show is for everyone looking to listen to some music, dance and just have a good time," he said. "The show is radio friendly. If you come to the show your ears aren't going to bleed out," he tells parents. "For the kids, it's just going to be nice, everyone is going to be hanging out. We're going to be out with everyone on the floor and talking to everybody and hanging out. It should be a pretty relaxing evening." The show will feature opening act, the Fox Confessor, and DJ Kwes, playing hip-hop, dance and rock in between sets.
