The new addition, which consists of two curved walls at the north and south ends of the existing cenotaph, lists the names of those who served in the First or Second World Wars and resided in Oakville at the time of their enlistment. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Among those expected to attend are Mayor Rob Burton, town councillors, William Shields, president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 114; Harry Barrett, former Oakville mayor and local historian; Padre Douglas Bramer; bugler Ray Walters, Detective Superintendent Chris Perkins as piper, Town of Oakville staff and residents. The George's Square Memorial and Cenotaph is located at Trafalgar Road at Palmer Avenue. Complimented by new benches and landscaping, the curved limestone walls with mounted bronze plaques, list more than 800 veteran names of those who served in one of the Great Wars. The original George's Square monument lists the names of veterans who died during their service to this country. From October to December 2008, the Town made the lists available to the public to confirm details and gather additional information before the names were permanently attached to the memorial.
