Oakville Saturday at Lakeside Park On Saturday, June 19, a Canadian Navy representative who calls Oakville home will present a framed pictorial history of the Oakville namesake warship, H.M.C.S. Oakville to mark the centennial of the Canadian Navy. Lieutenant (Navy) Glenn Woolfrey MMM, CD, Executive Officer of H.M.C.S. Star and local resident, will present the display to Mayor Rob Burton. The display includes a photograph of H.M.C.S. Oakville, a picture of the ship's badge and a short history of the ship's service. Since the Canadian Navy was established in 1910, more than 300 Canadian Navy ships have been named for communities from coast to coast. H.M.C.S. Oakville, a flower class corvette, was christened at Lakeside Park in Oakville, on Nov. 5, 1941. On Aug. 28, 1942, she was in a convoy attacked in the Windward Passage. Four ships were lost, but the Oakville sank a seasoned U 94, in part by ramming her. Among those participating in the ceremony will be TOWARF, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corp Oakville, Scouts Canada, Burloak Legion, and members of H.M.C.S. Star ships company. The Oakville Museum will present A Nod to the Navy; Oakville at Sea (June 19-July 4th) The Oakville Museum's celebration of the Royal Canadian Navy Centennial will feature art by T.A. Blakelock Students, images and artifacts from H.M.C.S Oakville, an interactive recreation of a ship's communication room and a tribute to the Women's Royal Canada Naval Service. The public is welcome to join the celebration Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lakeside Park with a traditional fly past from a heritage Harvard aircraft, followed by a ribbon cutting, speeches and tour of the museum exhibit. TOWARF will also host an open house in its building below Oakville museum. Two of the H.M.C.S. Oakville crew members, Jack Russell and Joe Smyth will be at the ceremony. INVENTORY CLEARANCE NO TAX!!!
