Vol. 48 No. 70 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" Coroner: difficult to link Paxil to death By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The coroner presiding over the inquest into the death of Sara Carlin, 18, advised the jury Tuesday that the anti-depressant Paxil does not appear to have been a factor in her death. Sara, an Oakville resident and graduate of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School, hanged herSara Carlin self in her parents' basement on Sunday, May 6, 2007. At the time of her death, Sara had been taking Paxil, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication, for more than a year despite Health Canada advisories warning doctors in 2003 and 2004 that Paxil was not recommended for people under 18 due to the increased risk of suicidal events. Oakville remembers a fallen son By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The stories of Colonel Geoff Parker, who he was and how he lived, won't end here -- his life was so great and full, friends and family could talk for 15 hours and still not capture everything. These were parting words of Father Aaron Orear during Saturday's memorial service for Parker at the George's Square Cenotaph. Parker, 42, who was born and raised in Oakville, was killed in Kabal, Afghanistan on May 18 by a suicide car bomber, who blew himself up beside an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) convoy Parker had been travelling with. Parker had been doing tactical reconnaissance within the country in preparation for an upcoming deployment. His death made him the highest-ranking Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan. However, to those who spoke at his memorial service, he was so much more. In the presence of approximately 100 people, including veterans, army cadets and emergency services personnel, speaker after speaker mounted a podium, set up on the cenotaph, to speakabout their memories of Parker.
