Sears Canada Inc. resident cancer hospice, were nominated for this award, however only a handful of the 70 volunteers could be on hand to accept the award. The founder of the hospice, Margaret Anderson, said it took seven years to open the hospice, which has been operational for 13 years. During that time almost 11,000 people have used the facility. "It has been very difficult as well as very rewarding," she said. The volunteers "bring warmth, kindness and support to the residents and families." They perform the day-to-day tasks outside of hands-on care, such as answering the phone, greeting visitors, cleaning and preparing meals. Their special role is seen in their many acts of kindness which are as simple as holding hands, singing hymns, offering a prayer, or just giving a warm hug. International Award, Canadians in Support of Afghan Women, sponsored by Ellis Don This organization began as result of an article written by Oakville resident Sally Armstrong and led to the formation of Canadians in Support of Afghan Women, CSAW.
