Linbrook began as a one-room classroom school Continued from page 3 5 · Friday, June 25, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com cert that the parents would come to and listen to their children perform. One of those very first students at the school was Gene Wright, who still lives in Halton. She said the school has changed since her time there. She said Grades 1 through 8 were taught in the one classroom. The entire class remained quiet while the teacher called up one grade at a time to the front of the class to instruct it. "No one spoke. You didn't get all this whispering and carrying on among the rest of the school. Everything was as quiet as a mouse," she said. "None of those classrooms were there, it was just that big room upstairs and everybody was in the same room. Downstairs was the kitchenette." In the school's early years there was a kitchen in the downstairs and the children received a warm meal. "It has changed considerably. All the houses that are built up there now, it's totally different than it was," Wright added. Back then the school was surrounded by fields and she walked a mile to school and back. She added there were just grassy fields back then with no sidewalks to walk on. "We walked to school in those years, we didn't have rides," she said but added that in the winter time she was able to get a ride by horse and sleigh with her friend going home when the snow was deep. The school had a 75th anniversary celebration in the fall of 2007. There was an open house ceremony with some speeches and musical performances at the school. The anniversary celebration cochair Barb Black said there were a lot of parents and former students still living in the community that came out to the open house. She added the open house also had a few people from the school's early years, including teachers and alumni. "It was actually fantastic. It was really well attended," Black said. "We had the library set up with old desks like the original classroom. We had somebody dress up as a teacher. We did that for the whole week during the school year and each classroom came through and they spent an hour in the room and they were pretending they were in the old days." Though Black never attended Linbrook, she had three children who did and she was on the school council. "We've tried to make it a celebration," Tennant said of the school closing. "We're honouring where we've been and where we are and we're looking for- dened, though, if the ward to where we're school structure was going." removed. She hopes the She said that a school is made up of people and it's not just a building. She would be sad- building can be used in some way to serve the community. * FREE DAILY SERVICE Morning and afternoon departures PRICE WILL INCREASE BY $2 to Fallsview Casino ST AS OF JULT 1 *After $10 Casino Rebate Government Photo ID required BOOK YOUR FIREPLACE BEFORE JUNE 30TH Call and save today!
