23 · Wednesday, July 7, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Galleries is reaching out Oakville Galleries is venturing beyond its usual art exhibits and special events at its two locations in town. It has launched a new arts initiative that will explore the potential of art to increase social and civic engagement. Thank You For Coming! is a series of programs to be held throughout Oakville and Halton. It involves a variety of partners. It will offer a range of free or low-cost programs for all residents, from teens to seniors and new Canadians. Thank You For Coming! includes participatory public art projects, lectures series, collaborative media arts programs, and special events such as magazine fairs and off-site exhibitions. These programs will be held in places such as libraries, community centres, assisted-living facilities, parking lots, places of worship, farmers' markets and seniors' residences. Oakville Galleries has also formed a youth council as part of this new initiative to facilitate sustainable youth engagement with the galleries while contributing to the development of a youth-led art scene in Oakville. "We could not be more pleased to be connecting the community to contemporary art and visual culture in this way," said Catherine Sicot, director of education and public programs at Oakville Galleries, in a press release. "Thank You for Coming! not only fosters engagement between new audiences and partners, but it also advances an expanded understanding of how art can function in personal, social and political contexts." A pilot of this initiative ran in the summer of 2009 with the support of the Oakville Community Foundation. The Ontario Trillium Foundation has since provided Oakville Galleries with a three-year grant to continue the project. Artist Sarah Febbraro has been hired to work with the galleries' education team and community partners to coordinate the project's development. Partners to date include the Oakville Public Library, Oakville Senior Citizens Residence, Art House, the YMCA of Oakville and the Harbourside Organic Farmers Market. Her initial concept of providing a free camp for children with cancer soon grew into something special. Addison was referred to Program Director Tom Stewart of Camp Trillium and after pooling their resources, a free Oakville community day camp for children with cancer and their families was born. Stewart is a man whose life has been repeatedly impacted by cancer. As a young boy, two of his siblings were diagnosed with leukemia. His mother, a single parent, also successfully battled throat and breast cancer. He credits Camp Trillium for helping his family through some very difficult times. His brother, Joe, felt the same kinship towards the organization. When Joe passed away in 1993, he requested to be buried with his Camp Trillium T-shirt. Stewart is not alone in his quest to give back to the foundation that supported his family. A devoted and sympathetic team, approximately half of Trillium staffers are previous campers. BEAUTY&Spa 2441 Lakeshore Rd. W. Camp Trillium is a compassionate organization that deserves attention. Funded completely by donations, it provides services and support for the entire family of children affected by cancer. This past year has been particularly difficult for the fundraising team due to economic conditions. Facility rental costs forced it to re-evaluate its budget for the Oakville location. Addison's call came at the ideal time. Trillium believes cancer affects each and every person within a family in very different ways. The camps attempt to normalize the experience for the children, allowing for common ground with others who've been through similar challenges. Their many programs also provide invaluable resources to unite families who are at different stages of their fight with the disease, providing information, connection to services, and support from each other. The proposed camp will take place at Addison Music Learning Centre studios and will include diverse elements such as outdoor and nature, swimming, talent show, arts, crafts and various other activities. Addison Music Learning Centre will provide the studio space as well as a specialist to add a musical component to the camp.
