Lady Hawks earn U11 field lacrosse gold Not even Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association officials could have anticipated how successful the debut of their girls' program would turn out to be. Hoping to attract enough players to field an under-11 team and a U15 squad, OMLA organizers were flooded with nearly 100 registered players in the first year of girls' lacrosse in Oakville. The massive numbers led the association to evolve its program to accommodate the overwhelming interest. "There was no way we wanted to turn away any girls interested in lacrosse," agreed Darlah Cordingley and Tanya Tymkiv, the director and assistant director, respectively, of the Oakville Lady Hawks. The OMLA girls' program has been successful in more than attracting enough players. The U11 representative team won four of its five games at the U11 Girls Field Lacrosse Provincials last weekend in Burlington, claiming the Pool B gold medal with a 4-3 victory over Brampton. The gold-medal performance capped off a season of continual improvement for the U11 players, many in their first year of lacrosse. The squad of 23 girls, varying in age from seven to 10 years old, won two of 10 regular-season games but closed the gap on its opponents throughout its inaugural campaign. The team, which also competed in tournaments in Scarborough, Brampton and Kitchener-Waterloo this season, will play in the Laurie Montgomery Fall Harvest Shoot-Out later this summer in Orangeville. The U11 house league season wrapped up last week with a Gala Day on the Queen Elizabeth Park fields. Girls participated in six different lacrosse stations (fastest shot, stick tricks, scoop relay, shoot and score, target shooting, and cradle relay) as well as round-robin games, a fun conclusion to a fun season. Coaching staff of the four U11 house league teams included Crystal Robinson, Andi De Ryck, Alyse Newsome, Liz Heidecker and Tanya Tymkiv. The U15 Lady Hawks, meanwhile, continue to prepare for their provincial championships, scheduled for July 3031 in Whitby. The team practices and plays Mondays and Wednesdays at White Oaks Secondary School. RIT defencemen on all-academic team Chris Haltigin and Dan Ringwald were named to the Atlantic Hockey Conference all-academic team. The Rochester Institute of Technology defencemen helped the Tigers reach the NCAA semifinals this season while maintaining a 3.0 or better GPA in the classroom. Also honoured was former Oakville Blades defenceman Trevor Eckenswiller, who also plays at RIT. Hinchcliffe second at Indy Lights race James Hinchcliffe finished second at the Corning 100 Indy Lights race in Watkins Glen, N.Y. Hinchcliffe earned his third pole of the season and led the race until J.K. Vernay passed him on a restart with three laps remaining and held on for the victory. The second-place finish moved Hinchcliffe into second overall in the point standings, 35 points behind Vernay, who won for the third time this season. Hinchcliffe has three podium finishes this season, including a victory, and has finished in the top five in each of his last five races. The next race on the circuit is July 18 in Toronto.
