17 · Friday, July 16, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Accessible sailing program needs participants For many, learning to sail is a way of overcoming fears and gaining confidence and independence. For people with disabilities, these elements are heightened, and that is why Melissa Vassallo wants to start an accessible sailing program in Oakville this summer. Oakville's first Accessible Sailing Program is to be a limited program put on by the Oakville Yacht Squadron (OYS), starting on Monday, July 26 and the OYS is scouting for participants to take part in the four -day pilot program. Anyone interested can get information through the OYS website, www.oysqn.com and emailing the application form or by calling Vassallo at 905-3997279, or emailing melissa@vassallo.ca. As this is the first year for the program, it will only run from Monday to Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for adults. There is no charge and Vassallo notes the result will be used to determine necessary funds through the recent Wheels in Motion event at Appleby College. Vassallo says that the experience can leave participants with a great feeling of freedom and accomplishment. Some of the money raised by Wheels in Motion may be used to purchase a sail boat and associated equipment that will allow persons with a disability living in or visiting Oakville, to have access to boats at 16 Mile Creek as well as in setting up the accessible sailing program. The sailing program run by the OYS is put on in conjunction with Sail Ontario. It will operate as part of the OYS Sailing School and will use a specially equipped sailing boat designed for this purpose. Melissa stresses that sailing is very important to people with disabilities because it is very liberating. "You feel connected to nature, you feel that possibilities are endless and you need to feel that anything is possible." Speak up!
