Local trio wins Eastern Canadian rugby title Ref also an elite player Three local teens helped Rugby Ontario's under17 men's team win gold at the Eastern Canadian under-18 championships last weekend in Truro, Nova Scotia. Jack Gillis, Dan Mathie and Mike Santangeli suited up for the provincial squad that overcame a late sixpoint deficit to defeat Eastern Ontario 28-20 in the championship game. Gillis, a Holy Trinity student, was a workhorse for the Ontario team at loosehead prop. Mathie, who attends Abbey Park, and Santangeli, an Oakville Trafalgar student, were subbed in at fullback and scrumhalf, respectively, prior to the comeback victory. Ontario trailed Eastern Ontario 20-14 with less than three minutes remaining in the gold-medal game before rallying for two converted tries. "Coming back to win the gold-medal game against such a strong under-18 team felt great," said Santangeli. "The whole weekend was a great experience." Ontario was undefeated in the tournament, defeating New Brunswick 15-8 and Newfoundland 12-7 in round-robin play before downing Quebec 15-7 in the semifinals. Teams from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island also competed in the tournament. Gillis, a former member of the national under-17 team, is a veteran of the Ontario rep program. Mathie and Santangeli are in their first year with the provincial squad. Continued from page 23 "Being a player makes me better at refereeing because I know what players try to do to cheat," said Spice. "At the same time, it also helps with positioning and knowing the flow of the game even more." At some stage, Spice will have to choose between playing rugby or refereeing. According to Hall, that tough decision will not come for another four or five years, but eventually Spice will reach a fork in the rugby road. "The other big challenge is that www. .com she is a very good rugby player," said Hall. "For her, there is a challenge of where do I fit into this, what do I want to do more, play or referee." Such a decision remains far off and, for the moment, Spice enjoys her life as a typical teenager, balancing a busy life of athletics and time with her friends. Spice has even picked out her prom dress, but this is the one she will be wearing in a fund-raising event: the Prom Dress Games to raise funds for breast cancer, scheduled for July 29 at Crusader Park.
