Keeping the oak in Oakville By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Town of Oakville has taken another step towards designating the historic 250-year-old White Oak tree, located outside Halton Region's headquarters, as its first stand-alone heritage tree. The Heritage Oakville Advisory Committee passed a motion Tuesday giving notice of its intention to designate the tree under the Ontario Heritage Act. If council approves the motion on Monday, Aug. 9, notice will be served on the property owner (Halton Region) and the Ontario Heritage Trust. The notice of designation must also be published in local newspapers after which there will be a 30-day period in which objections may be made. If no objection is made a staff report along with a designation bylaw will be brought before council for approval. Being designated under the Heritage Act would mean the tree would be protected under a specific bylaw and could not be destroyed or significantly altered without the consent of Town Council. See Tree page 3 Halton police are advising residents not to be fooled by an Internet fraudster masquerading as a U.S. marine. The e-mail scam, which is circulating around Halton, begins with residents receiving an unsolicited e-mail from someone claiming to be a corporal serving in the Middle East. In the e-mail, the person claiming to be the military officer states that a few months ago, while on tour, his unit discovered $10 million in the mansion of a militant ruler during a covert raid. The suspect then said the money was stowed and is now being moved out of the country. The suspect solicits the email's recipient to help in receiving and securing the cash. The recipient's full name, address and phone number are requested in return for the promise of compensation of 20 per cent of the total cash. Detective Constable Colin Grierson of the Halton police Fraud Unit warns residents to steer clear of all such scams. "Initially the information they are asking for seems fairly innocent, but there are one of two things they are going to be looking for on a scam like this. They are going to be looking for your personal information, so you are looking at a form of identity theft or down the road they are going to try and get you to give them some of your own money.
