MICHELLE SIU / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Senior baseball provincials begin at River Oaks The Oakville Whitecaps and five other teams from across the province will spend the next week playing for a provincial senior baseball championship at River Oaks Park. Oakville Little League (OLL) is hosting this year's Provincial Senior League Baseball Championships, which began yesterday (Wednesday) and conclude Wednesday, Aug. 4. The tournament features teams of 15- and 16-year-old players from the Ottawa, Cornwall, Thunder Bay and Windsor areas as well as the host Whitecaps, who were granted an automatic entry. The tournament champion will earn a berth in this year's Canadian championships, which will be held in St. John, New Brunswick. This is the third straight year that OLL is hosting a major tournament. The league ran the minor A provincials last season and the Canadian Senior League Championships in 2008. The Whitecaps were scheduled to be in action last night against Thunder Bay South (a game that began after the Beaver's press deadline) and are slated to play their second game today (Thursday) at noon against East Nepean. Oakville's other contests are scheduled for tomorrow (Friday, 6:30 p.m. versus South Ottawa), Saturday (6:30 p.m. against Lasalle's West Turtle Club) and Sunday (6:30 p.m. versus Cornwall). The top four teams in round-robin play advance to the playoffs, which begin Tuesday. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday. Local resident wins world lacrosse U16 gold Local resident Ben Follows helped the Mimico Mountaineers midget team win gold at last week's World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England. The under-16 squad won all five of its games at the competition, including a 13-11 victory over a team from Lake Oswego, Oregon in the championship game. The Mountaineers scored the first four goals of the game and led most of the contest until Oregon tied the game 11-11 with only a few minutes left in the second half. Mimico then scored two late goals to earn the victory. Mimico had also defeated the Oregon team -- a club assembled last summer via tryouts from five different regional programs in the state -- 11-10 in the round-robin. The Mountaineers also downed a pair of English select teams and a club from Vermont in the round-robin, outscoring those opponents by a combined total of 46-25. In addition, Mimico players enjoyed the opportunity to watch Team Canada's men's team and other international squads in action, receive some coaching advice from Team Canada men's coach Dave Huntley and forge friendships with their U16 opponents.
