5 · Thursday, August 5, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Sailing adventure is a lifestyle not holiday Continued from page 4 behind our schedule, we would have been caught in that. You could see it very quickly, it covered the area that we had, an hour ago, been sailing through. "That was really cool, to look back and see that and go, "holy, (expletive) we were just there an hour ago." The Brouse crew is heading off for more adventures at the end of July. The family will head back up to Nova Scotia for the next six weeks before flying back to Trinidad in early September to catch up with Discovery, where they will remain anchored until sometime around mid-October, when hurricane season ends. "Trinidad will be home for the next couple of months. Probably mid-October, we will start to venture farther north again when the hurricanes have started to peter out," said Elizabeth. "From there we will retrace our steps as far as the island of Bequia, which is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Bequia is where we spent two months and made some really good friends, local, on shore and so we want to see them again." From Bequia, it is still to be decided but there are a number of destinations the family is currently mulling over. "It would be a decision to make of are we going to go to the Panama Canal and cross the Pacific Ocean? Or will we stay in the western Caribbean and do Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica?" said Elizabeth. "Then bring the boat farther north and maybe the end game would be Florida. But my husband really has a hankering for the south Pacific." One thing Brouse wants people to understand about their voyage is that this trip isn't a vacation; it's their way of life. There is a lot of work that has to be done to be able to sustain their life on the sea. "We're not on vacation. If we were living the last 12 months like we were on vacation, we'd be dead by now. I have to cook, I have to clean, I have to shop (and) I have to teach my children," she said. "We have daily boat maintenance and chores that have to be done, it's a lifestyle. This is our life. This is our day-to-day life." SUBMITTED PHOTO AWESOME: A volcano erupting, as seen seven miles off the coast of Montserrat. With plans made for the next several months, the family doesn't know when the trip will end or where, or even if, they will be returning to Oakville once they do decide to stop. "In all honesty, we really don't know. My children are not asking to come home. They're thrilled to see their friends here and the blitz we are doing but they want to go back to the boat," said Brouse. "They say, "Mom, we're not done yet." We haven't seen everything we want to see. "Coming back after a year was my idea, I mentally needed a break from life on a boat and life in the heat. My husband, if it was up to him, we would not be in Oakville right now just because of the expense and preparation that you have to do to a boat to put it away for six weeks." Right now, Elizabeth's mantra is to take it one year at a time because she is a teacher too, not just cruising. "We have kids that I'm teaching and there are other things to consider. So we'll just play it a year at a time."
