www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 6, 2010 · 30 Independence is attractive to self-employed students Continued from page 28 "I believe the goal was 600 this year and I'm pretty sure they said they surpassed that goal. Last year in 2009, it was 550." Of those 600 students, 16 of them are from the Halton Region. In order to be accepted, the participants must meet certain eligibility requirements and submit a business plan before being interviewed. Hartford is another student in the program from Halton. The 23-year-old is the founder of GTA Dryer-Vent Cleaning. He runs his company from his home in Oakville, but serves people in the Greater Toronto Area. Cleaning dryer vents was a chore his parents made him do at home. Hartford just finished his undergraduate at McGill University and will be taking a law course at the University of Toronto in September. He says he had to reassess what he was qualified to do right now. Since he had some experience cleaning dryers, this was his next move as most dryer-vent set ups are the same, says Hartford. He is aiming to bring more awareness to the safety aspect of cleaning dryer-vents with his company. As dryer lint accumulates, Hartford suggests cleaning the vents every one to two years. Though he enjoys this line of work, he isn't sure if he'll make a career of it. "I think I could easily see myself going into business," said Hartford. "I found that a lot of the skills I learned go beyond just the physical cleaning of the vents. "Running everything on your own is much more work, but it's a lot more enjoyable that way too. There's a direct relationship between the effort you put into the business and what comes out of it. I like the independence," said Hartford.
