Burton recently announced that he has pledged to join Mayors For Peace, an organization started by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which seeks to pressure nations around the world to destroy their stockpiles of nuclear arms. The organization is currently made up of 4,069 member cities in 144 countries. The Oakville mayor's announcement comes as Japan commemorates the Mayor Rob Burton 65th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima during the Second World War. This single bomb killed approximately 140,000 people. Three days later a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing approximately 80,000 people. Fifteen days later Japan surrendered to the Allies, ending the Second World War. A statement on the Mayors For Peace website speaks about remembering these tragic events. "In August 1945, atomic bombs instantaneously reduced the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to rubble, taking hundreds of thousands of precious lives. Today, more than 60 years after the war, thousands of citizens still suffer the devastating aftereffects of radiation and "We wish to publicly express our delight at Mayor Rob Burton's pledge to join Mayors for Peace." Letter collectively signed by local peace and human rights group, See Letters to the Editor, page 6 unfathomable emotional pain. "To prevent any repetition of the A-bomb tragedy, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have continually sought to tell the world about the inhumane cruelty of nuclear weapons and have consistently urged that nuclear weapons be abolished." The mayor's announcement of his support of this initiative has drawn support from local peace and human rights organizations. "We wish to publicly express our delight at Mayor Rob Burton's pledge to join Mayors For Peace," states a letter filed for publication with The Oakville Beaver (see page 6) and signed collectively by Barbara Birkett, physician for Global Survival; Bev LeFrancois, Women of Halton Action Movement; Stephen Dankowich, director, Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights and Mervyn Russell, chair, Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights. 200 Lakeshore Road East, Oakville 905.842.0232 www.burrowsclothiers.com Sign Up On Line www.ultimatedrivers.ca DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE, LET US HELP YOUR EARN IT 17 Years ent of Excell Service · Defensive Driving Certificate Program - MTO Approved Minimizes Road Test Time and Qualifies for Maximum Insurance Discount · Advance Defensive Driving Program Minimizes Road Test Time, Qualifies for Maximum Insurance Discount and Teaches You Emergency Skills · Driver Retraining Program for Reinstating Driver's License · Complete Refresher Program Prepares you for G2 or G License · Refresher Program Helps Reviewing your Driving Habits for Test · Preparation and Evaluation Warm Up Practice Before the Test · Winter Time Driving Program Helps Overcom Your Winter Driving Jitters 7 PROGRAMS TO CHOOSE FROM: 4 DAY PROGRAMS r TM s r AUG. 16 19 $50 OFF AUG. 30 SEPT. 2 the Regular Price SUMMER SPECIAL L LTIMATE DRIVERS A "Training Safe Drivers of Tomorrow" T T r Proud Sponsors of the Joey McColm Team e T ® 407 Speers Road 905-825-1172 Suite 205
