There are now a total of 26 candidates seeking to fill 12 Ward and Regional councillor positions and one mayoral position. A recent entry to the latter is former mayor Ann Mulvale who announced at the end of June that she will take on Mayor Rob Burton for a third battle for the mayor's job between the two during the election. A third mayoral candidate John Kay, withdrew his candidacy on July 5. Other recent arrivals include Michael Loomans, who will join John McMullen and incumbent Ralph Robinson in competing for the Ward 1 councillor's seat. A former councillor and past president of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, Stephen Sparling, has joined John Hogg in challenging Ward 2 incumbent Cathy Duddeck in the race for the Ward 2 Town and Regional councillor's seat. Chartwell-Maple Grove Residents' Association Vice President Dave Gittings is now running against Trafalgar-Chartwell Residents' Association President Nick Hutchins and incumbent Mary Chapin for the Ward 3 councillor position. Former Bronte Butterfly Foundation Executive Director Susan Sheppard also recently threw her hat into the ring announcing that she will vie for the Ward 4 councillor position where she will face off against Brian Burton. The current Ward 4 Councillor Roger Lapworth has yet to file his candidacy papers. Finally, Rosario Bragdon of Young Achievers of Halton will take on incumbent Max Khan for the Ward 6 councillor seat. Town and Regional Ward 6 Councillor Tom Adams, Town and Regional Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll, Town and Regional Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar and Town and Regional Ward 3 Councillor Keith Bird are currently running unopposed in their wards.
