Stampeders roll to three OFC championships Aided by contributions from many Oakville players, the Burlington Stampeders won three Ontario Football Conference championships Sunday in Waterloo. The bantam Stampeders concluded their third straight undefeated season with a come-frombehind 28-27 victory over the Sarnia Sturgeon, the junior varsity tier one Stampeders pounded the Twin Cities Predators 43-0 and the varsity Stamps concluded the sweep with a 47-29 win over Twin Cities. Bantam Brandon Smyk's touchdown run and the ensuing convert with five minutes remaining in regulation gave Burlington its first lead in the bantam final. Sarnia dominated the opening half, building a 20-13 advantage at the break. The teams traded touchdowns as Sarnia led 27-20 after three, but Burlington kicked a single and then Smyk powered into the end zone through a gap provided by the Stamps' offensive line. The Stampeders preserved the onepoint advantage by intercepting a pass with two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Mitch Stodulski also came up big defensively throughout the game for Burlington, returning an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and adding four tackles on the afternoon. Josh Charnicovsky, Carter Gladman, Chandler Bradshaw and Michael Paren also play for the bantam Stampeders. Junior varsity After a slow start, the junior varsity Stampeders blew the game open in the second half to coast to victory. Burlington led 7-0 at halftime and 140 late in the third quarter before exploding for 29 more points. "The Predators were able to hang with us until the third quarter," said head coach Sean Williamson, "but once we started rolling, they were not able to keep the pace." Andrew Ziebart enjoyed a strong game for the Stampeders, contributing a sack and five tackles for the team's leagueleading defence. Ziebart also booted five converts in the contest. Offensively, Doug Dubeau had three receptions for Burlington. Other Oakville players on the junior varsity Stampeders are John Thomas, Brady Switzer, J.P. Ortega, Sean Terrio, Michael Joukov, Keelan Dorsett and Connor Jensen. Varsity Revenge was on the mind of the varsity Stampeders as they took the field Sunday night. Twin City defeated Burlington in last year's OFC final and handed the Stampeders their only regular-season loss of 2010, but the tables turned last weekend. Burlington jumped out to an early 140 lead and took a 21-12 advantage into half time. The Stamps led 28-15 through three quarters. "The coaches did a great job preparing the boys and, as a result, the players were at their very best," said Stampeders head coach and former Canadian Football League star Neil Lumsden. "They played like champions and that's what they are. They're a tremendous group of young men." Cooper Sleeman, Joe Stampone, Anthony Berry and Trevor Reid suited up for the Stampeders.
