23 · Thursday, August 12, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Health Oakville Beaver Play it ForeWard tourney raises money for birthing bed at OTMH The Fourth Annual Blazing Baicorp Play it ForeWard Charity Golf & Spa event took place on May 27 at the Hockley Valley Resort. More than 100 golfers and a dozen spa goers came out to support the event and helped raise $25,000 for Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The proceeds raised from the tournament will go toward the purchase of a new birthing bed for the OTMH Maternal Child Unit. Giving birth can be one of the most joyful and stressful experiences for moms. In order to reduce stress incurred during labour and delivery and to provide physicians and nurses with the ability to respond quickly and easily, OTMH's Maternal Child Unit requires new birthing beds. Birthing beds feature an integrated foot section that simply slides under the bed for birth and back into place afterward. The birthing bed has a streamlined design, which allows equipment to be stored completely within the perimeter (instead of protruding out), therefore protecting healthcare staff as they move quickly around their patient. Safety is always a primary concern during labour and delivery and birthing beds provide enhanced safety features such as inflatable air pillows in back and seat that decreases the need to reposition the patient for delivery and four dual-lock casters keep the bed in place. Next year's tournament will take place on May 26, 2011 at Hockley Valley Resort. Swim to raise funds for mental health program The second annual Swim for Mental Health fundraiser will be hosted by Brookdale Swimming Pool the week of August 9 with proceeds going towards the purchase of essential equipment for the Mental Health program at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the Day Program in Oakville. Event organizers, Frank Zamuner and his wife Lea, have several goals for this event, including raising awareness about mental health illnesses and eliminating the stigma attached to them. Frank will build upon the successes achieved in 2009 and again complete his goal of swimming 1,000 lengths of the pool. "In 2005 I had a triple bypass operation. When I came home after surgery to recover, I found it very hard not to do anything as I was a very active person before the surgery. I had a difficult time sleeping and eventually I got depressed," Frank Zamuner Zamuner said. "While looking for help, I found out how great a need there is for psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and related medical equipment...I have been fortunate to receive excellent care from OTMH and found out that it helps to be active when you suffer from depression. Simply put, I feel better after swimming." To date more than $16,000 has been raised (surpassing last year's total), but the Zamuners have a goal of reaching $30,000. The Swim for Mental Health fundraiser will take place from Monday, August 9 to Friday, August 13 between the hours of 12:302 pm. Zamuner would like to call upon the community to support him, from pledging him, to making a donation, to helping him complete his goal of 1,000 lengths of the pool. All are also welcome to come down to Brookdale Swimming Pool to cheer him on. Visit www.swimformentalhealth.com to learn more and find out how you can get involved.
