Medical DR OARTPiR M P & B Ont, Physician , Surgeon, etc Offloa aud residence â€" Petar St., ITlesberton Women and the Institute The following paper was read by Mis. Robeit Best at the last meeting of the Won an's Institute, held in llio town ball : Last week I was talking to a young liidy and our conversation drifted to housework. Slie 8»id, " I have no de- sire to do house work. I think you can tell a cook just by her looks." Add thi>n she asked the question, "Do you think that diiineKtic science traininor w 11 have n refilling influence on this woik 1 " I said "Yes, I ccrtiiiiily do." I h<ive since been thinking of that young woman and of the idea she had of house work, and the thought has been rcspuniible fur two or three remarks that I have here gathered together We have met here this afternoon with one point in view, namely the better- ment (if the home and all that dear name implies. Uow is this to be accoioplishen? Is it not by taking a difft^rent riew of th«< routine work that every woman and every home maker is largely el3ga|{ed in. Mrs. Ella Wheeler Wilcox says the world needs nrifo mothers, wise wives and good homes, and yet women try to be everything but domesticated I am glad to say a change has gradually been taking place. Heretofore housework was confined almost entirely to the ignorant classes, and aa a conse(|Uence the work was thought ignoble. But there are no workers that need the training and know- ledge as tiiose who are ministering to the health and cooifurt of hu.sLandand chil- dren. All honest wirk is honorable and all honest work is necessary. I think if there is one thing we shoold impress upon people it is the nobility of labor. There is an immense satisfaction in know- ing that we can do things and that we can do them well. Let us feel that all work is noble. We need not let our work degrade ui, no matter how servile it may appear to be. When I awaken in the morning I do not rise immediately, but I plan the work of the day and study to see how I may save steps and accomp- lish as much work. I Knd that if 1 go about my work thoughtlessly I travel over the same ground several times when it is not necessary. However, a few steps more or leas do Lot matter much if tno breakfast is a success. Now it seems to me that the one thing that all workers need, perhaps farmers more than towns- people, is to keep above the thought of drudgery, to look beyond the toihng to the result. I am a farmer's wife, but not one of your drudging kind. I think any woman will agree that wo can work from mum till eve if we are so inclined, and enjoy our work. Sivoral women have aaid to me, " I have no time to go to the Institute meet- ings. I have more than I can do at homo." Now some of these women bad little children at home and felt that they could not got away. But I felt that these of all women in the country should try to attend liiHtitute meetings. That tired mother is just the one to belong to our Institute. She needs to get away. If ahe cuuld get away from the children for even a couple of hours and feel free of care, she would return to het duties with new light and life. We 3an do thing* if wo will, but the will is lacking and that is just the point where so many women fail. The desire is not strong enough . But thoy will find that when it is they will have time to get out and take tbe p<trt they should in this work for the betterment of niankind, I feel it a priv- ilege to impart anything I kno* to any one. I know a lady who had an eicellunt recipe for pickles and another lady asked if aho might have a copy. " Oh, yes," she said, "if you will promice not to give it loHiiy one elae." If that woman had attended the Woman's Institute mcetinux she Would never have said that. She Would have said Yes, pass it on, give it to any one who warns it. Oh yea, the In- stitute broaden's us and takes us out of ourselves, and makes us try to help others. It is those women who stay at home who see the moat fiults in their neighbuH. The more we xo alHiut and come in contact with other people we will see good in all. I think it is the duty of every woman in the ooinmunity to be a ineinbor of the Institute. Burely seveial heads ought to bu butter than one. Just think of all the woniun in a coinmunily meeting for the express purpoHe :if discussing house keep- ing and home making themes which are dear to the heart of every good woman. I think the (ir^anizition of the Women'ti Institute is one of tlie finest things that was ever do:i«^ by any governmeni. I am u Conse rNativn, but I give ciidit to tbe Keforin gnvernmont for the help it gave to BBtablish the Women's Institute. DR. A. T. MONO Uraduate Toronto Unlverelty.
