December 12, 1923 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE Hospital for Sick Children COLLEGE ST., TORONTO. MARKDALE ASSAULT CASE IS DISMISSED * S Dear Mr. Editor: J Recfnt discoveries til medical \ science have called attention to the great service rendered by an up-to- date hospital through facilities pro- vided for research. Probably few laymen appreciate the amount of this work conducted under the auspices of the Hospital for Sick Children. Yet It is only by intensive study of the causes of children's diseases that the hospital .naff has been able -rb establish a world- famous record for cures. Statistics how that the rate of Infant mortal- ity In this Province has been steadily fl "creating, until It is now amons tlie lowest In Iho world. What that means Is that hundreds of Ontario parents owe their children's lives to the research work ID the laboratories of the Hospital for Sick Children. Although the doctors give their , services freely, the bills for equip- ment add up annually to a good <nany thousands of dollars. But In ?lew of the results attained, I feel that not one of your readers will cavil M the money KO spent, and I confld'-ntly venture the hop* that many of them at this Christmas sea- ton will wli-h to enrol themselves in ;he Hospital's campaign on behalf of Ontario's childhood. To carry on this research work The case of assault brought before Magistrate Creasor on Tuesday of last week in Markdale was dismissed. In the action John Eagles charged Russell Mathewson with assault to do bodily injury. Considerable evi- dence was taken before Magistrate Creasor arrived at a decision. His finding was that the defendant was not responsible for the occurrence. NOTICE TO CREDITORS Hone. Fox of Meaford, formerly of To- ronto, to detention for not less than six months and not more than two years less one day. Fox was found guily by a jury of charge of arson in connection with the recent destruction by fire of the Euphrasia mill near Duncan. He admitted his complicity, but his Lord- ship stated that he had dealt lenient- ly with him because of testimony as to his former good character which had been submitted. Fire Marshall E. P. Heaton of To- ronto had previously entered a plea for leniency, in vew of the fact that Fox had acted under the direction of his employer, William Moore, who was sentenced to four years in the penitentiary about a month ago, and that he had subsequently given infor- mation respecting the causes of other fires in the district. Postmaster Hammill and Chief Constable Clark also asked for leniency for Fox. . n for instance, the Hospital doctors ities, if any, held by them. looked after an average of 203 in- i AND further take notice that after j And the expenditure although whittled down to the minimum com- mensurnte with efficiency w:.s the regard which tho people of <)n tario have for the Hospital's work and the generosity with which 'li-'y express that ropnn'..
